Final Reflection

For the entire holiday, i did some research and posted them on this blog.I have learned much more about the digestive system. This blog would be very useful as i can continue looking at it to remind myself about the digestive system. Writing out my learning objectives helps me to work towards them.Overall, the project really helped me learn a lot.Bye!

The digestive system

When you eat your food, the teeth and saliva in the mouth would break down the starch , the tongue would help mix the food with the saliva. When it reaches the gullet, the muscles in its walls would contract and relax to produce a wave-like movement that pushes the food into the stomach. When it reaches the stomach, the muscles in the wall of the stomach contract and churn the food to mix it with digestive juices. After that it reaches the small intestine where most of the digestion occurs. The undigested food is then moved to the large intestine where the cells lining the large intestine absorb vitamins as well as mineral salts and excess water. The rest are discharged from the body through the anus.

Week 7 reflection

For these 7 weeks , i have learnt a lot more about the digestive system and its function.I hope i can learn more in the last week of the project.

Week 6 reflection

I am learning many things about the digestive system though i did not do much this week as i went for a camp.I should be able to produce more research findings in the next two weeks.

Week 5 reflection

For this week, i have learned about the production of digestive juices . I have also learnt a lot of facts about the digestive system and hope that i can learn more in the next three weeks.I hope that i would learn more than expected from this project.

Production of digestive juices

The salivary glands in the mouth produces saliva which contains an enzyme that digests the starch from food into smaller molecules. The next set of digestive juices are found in the stomach. It produces stomach acid and digestive juices and an enzyme that digests protein. The next set, found in the pancreas, produces a wide array of enzymes that break down the carbohydrate, fat and protein. The last set of digestive juices is found in the liver. It is also known as bile. The bile acid dissolves fats into the watery content of the intestine.

Week 4 reflection

For this week, most of the days i was on a holiday so i was unable to find anything about the digestive system. So the next week, i will try to find out more about digestion and nutrition.

Week 3 reflection

For this week , i have learnt about the pancreas and its function. I am going on holiday and will be unable to find out more about the digestive system , but when i come back i will be able to find and collect more fascinating facts about the digestive system.

The Pancreas

The pancreas is a small organ located in the upper abdomen and adjacent to the small intestine. The pancreas helps to break down protein, carbohydrates and fats using the digestive juices from the pancreas and the intestines . It also produces chemicals that neutralize acids that pass from the stomach into the small intestine.

The Liver

The liver is a vital organ in our bodies. It has a wide range of functions , such as: detoxification(The process of removing toxic substances or qualities from the body), protein synthesis ( the process in which cells build proteins) and production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. The liver is located under the diaphragm.

Week 2 reflection

For this week, i learnt about the gall bladder and liver.I am still having difficulty in creating the graph but i will try to manage.I am still trying to achieve my learning targets. I hope i will be able to know more facts of the digestive system and what it is made up of.

The Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a small muscular sack that acts as a storage tank for bile(a bitter greenish-brown alkaline fluid that aids digestion and is made in the liver by liver cells). The gallbladder stores the bile to have it available in larger quantities for secretion(a process by which substances are produced and discharged from a cell, gland, or organ for a particular function in the organism or for excretion) when a meal is eaten. The gall bladder is located just below the liver.

Week 1 Reflection

I have learnt that the organs that make up the digestive system are not just the mouth, gullet, stomach ,small intestine and large intestine. There is the liver ,gall bladder ,pancreas and much more.I am having difficulty in learning how to create a graph but with my father's help and a little more exploring , a graph would be created in no time. I know that i would be able to learn more fascinating facts about the digestive system and how it works. Bye!

My Learning Targets

I am trying to find out:
What is the importance of a nutritional and healthy diet?
What makes up the digestive system and what is its function?
How is food processed and broken down and used by the body?
How do nutrients help our body?
What is the importance of our digestive system?
