The digestive system

When you eat your food, the teeth and saliva in the mouth would break down the starch , the tongue would help mix the food with the saliva. When it reaches the gullet, the muscles in its walls would contract and relax to produce a wave-like movement that pushes the food into the stomach. When it reaches the stomach, the muscles in the wall of the stomach contract and churn the food to mix it with digestive juices. After that it reaches the small intestine where most of the digestion occurs. The undigested food is then moved to the large intestine where the cells lining the large intestine absorb vitamins as well as mineral salts and excess water. The rest are discharged from the body through the anus.

Production of digestive juices

The salivary glands in the mouth produces saliva which contains an enzyme that digests the starch from food into smaller molecules. The next set of digestive juices are found in the stomach. It produces stomach acid and digestive juices and an enzyme that digests protein. The next set, found in the pancreas, produces a wide array of enzymes that break down the carbohydrate, fat and protein. The last set of digestive juices is found in the liver. It is also known as bile. The bile acid dissolves fats into the watery content of the intestine.
